BELVEDERES


MIRADORES DE PEÑAFLOR Y DE BENAMEJÍ
(Peñaflor AND Benamejí BELVEDERES)

MIRADOR DE BENAMEJÍ

MIRADOR DE PEÑAFLOR

They belonged to the Signorial Houses of Peñaflor and Benamejí and were aimed to attend the feasts and shows displayed at the Plaza or square.
Both of them are undoubtedly important and date back to the XVIIIth century; the Peñaflor belvedere is situated at the corner with the Mas y Prat Street and the Benameji House’s is placed at the corner with the Canovas del Castillo (formerly Cinteria) Street.
Their layouts are main doors at the ground floors, two or three floors with open balconies with arcades on that age’s characteristic supports and the typical protective domes, using for this aim the balconies corbels.
That date polychrome decoration gives delicacy and grace to them. 



 

STREET ALTARPIECES

CAPILLA ABIERTA DE JESÚS SIN SOGA (Jesus Without Rope Open Chapel)

At the former Odreria Street, today Jesus sin Soga St., it is preserved a chapel which gives name to the street, attached to the walls of St. Barbara Church. In the chapel it is venerated a large-sized painting representing the image of  the Nazarene; this is the finest sample of an open chapel at ground level existing in our town.
The first news from this chapel are from 1618.
It has a large arch closed by a very sober iron gate with balusters and three anagrams, one crown and one inscription in its upper part.
Its inside is also very sober with an altar bench and a large painting of Our Lord Jesus sin Soga cramming the wall.
At both sides of the painting and opposite each other, there are two small doors crowned by ear-like pieces of mixed lines.


 

RETABLO CALLEJERO
DEDICADO A LA ADVOCACIÓN DE LA EXALTACIÓN DE LA CRUZ
(Street Altarpiece dedicated to the Name of the Holy Cross Exaltation)

RETABLO CALLEJERO

At the Conde (Count’s) Street, placed on the front of the Las Teresas convent there is a semi-circular niche provided with a small roof and protected by a small balcony; inside it a wooden Cross on a frescoed background is venerated.
This altarpiece dates back probably to the XVIIIth century, the convent foundation times.

RETABLO CALLEJERO
DEDICADO A LA ADVOCACIÓN DE LA VIRGEN DEL VALLE
(Street altarpiece dedicated to the Name of the Virgin of the Valley)

RETABLO CALLEJERO

It is located in the San Antonio St., at the San Gil quarters.
This chapel has a quadrangular structure and is attached to one of the facades of the walls that enclosed perimetrically the fortress or Alcazar. A semi-spherical vault covers it. 
The vault’s inside leans on pendentives decorated with Mary’s anagram between two palms; there is a stretched medallion and a pendant in the centre.
We can see on the facade a semi-circular arch protected by simple pilasters crowned by pinnacles; through the grille, the inner altar can be contemplated, it is ornated with a painting of Our Lady of the Valley (Nuestra Senora del Valle) on a Baroque altarpiece.
The chapel dates back to 1726 and the altarpiece and the painting have that Ecijan Baroque aesthetics of the XVIIIth century.

CAMARIN DE LA VIRGEN DEL VALLE (The Virgin of the Valley’s Chapel)

It is located in the Maria Auxiliadora Street.
It has a six-sided plan; its front elevation simulates a large lantern open at all its fronts with semi-circular openings alternated with angular pilasters, which, at their vertical projection, after surpassing the cornice, are crowned by curved triangular pendentives. 
The stretched dome outside is decorated with two-coloured tiles; its centre has a brick top crowned by a weather vane, accentuating this way the building verticality sensation.
Inside we find over a small altar with a bench the image of the Patron Saint, with no artistic interest.
It is not known whether the chapel designed by Francisco Torres Ruiz reproduces partially the disappeared one. 




CIVIL BUILDINGS

LA CASA DEL GREMIO DE LA SEDA (The House of the Silk Traders Guild).

It is placed in the Más y Prat Street and dates back to the XVIIIth century.
It belonged to the Gremio de la Seda (Silk Traders Guild).
The upper floors structure is similar to the belvederes’.
It has been recently restored giving back its entire original colour to the facade.



CHARMING PLACES

PLAZA DE SANTA CRUZ (Holy Cross Square)

PLAZA DE SANTA CRUZ

This Square of beautiful facades shows a central monument dedicated to the Cross made of marble and filigreed ironworking.  
It is surrounded by orange trees and dominated by the Holy Cross Church (Iglesia de Sta. Cruz).



PLAZA DE SANTA MARIA (St. Mary’s Square)

PLAZA DE SANTA MARIA

This is a harmonious group of old Ecijan buildings, where its arcades give the barrier reminiscences of a convent’s patio.
It is surrounded by the St. Mary’s tower, the monumental arcade, the palace’s facade and in its centre it is shown the Triumph of Mary as Our Lady of the Valley. 


CALLE SECRETARIO ARMESTO (Secretary Armesto Street)

CALLE SECRETARIO ARMESTO

VThis road will take you to the convent of Marroquíes and at its end, among traditional facades, you will find the most sumptuous Baroque represented by the Church of Los Descalzos (Discalced or Barefoot Carmelite Friars).


RESTOS DEL ALCAZAR (PICADERO) (Alcazar or Town Fortress Remains)

RESTOS DEL ALCAZAR (PICADERO)

These are the remains of the Muslim Alcazar or Fortress.
It is placed on the summit of the town, where first the Turdetano and later on the Roman settled; the Muslim people used part of these former buildings and material to erect their fortress. 


SANTA CRUZ OR HOLY CROSS MUDEJAR ARCH.

ARCO MUDEJAR DE SANTA CRUZ

It is placed at today’s Santa Cruz Parish church.
These are the remains of an older mosque located at the Muslim quarters.
The arch is Mudejar style and belonged to the late medieval church built on the mosque.

On the tower – the former minaret - two interesting Arab inscriptions are preserved, carved in Kufic characters; the texts talk about fountains building on the years 930 and 977.



OSUNA GATE

An enclave of historic interest is found at these remains of the Muslim walls.
At this point there used to be one of the entrances to the walled enclosure at the Muslim period, the Bab Usuna or Gate of Osuna.<

PUERTA CERRADA (Closed Gate)

PUERTA CERRADA

This historically interesting enclave has a great variety of elements and a great beauty.
From this point, you can contemplate the Carmen tower, facades of the walls, the Jail and the Tithe buildings, the old Inn and the stone fountain.
All these elements are combined in a strong plasticity picture: fountain, buildings, trees, water, shadow...

PLAZA DE COLÓN (Columbus Square)

PLAZA DE COLÓN

We find in its middle a brick fountain where long ago the mounts used to stop.
One tower stands out; it belongs to the Muslim walls, is almost 10 metres wide, solid in its lower part and has an eight-sided chamber with a vestibule starting at the end of the jetty that links the wall and the tower.  
It was attached to the town walls outside.


PLAZA DE SANTIAGO (St. James Square)

PLAZA DE SANTIAGO

This is one of the most typical places of Ecija, with a wonderful perspective of a stone cross with artistic lamps, together with the main entrance and tower belonging to the church of the same name
It is surrounded by most of the interesting monuments of the town: architectonic vestiges of the XVth (main altar ashlars and columns), XVIth (side nave and chapels) and XVIIIth (yards and tower) centuries, so you can contemplate the Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles.


PLAZA DE LA CONSTITUCIÓN (The – Spanish- Constitution Square)

PLAZA DE LA CONSTITUCIÓN

Being placed at the very centre of the town, this square stands out because of the beauty of the building presiding it, the Benamejí Palace; on its large Churrigueresque facade you can admire, as in a reredos, the variety of adornments, statues, coats of arms and the elegant central balcony.
All this, together with the surrounding hamlet and streets framework bestows the Square its spectacular beauty.


PLAZA DE SAN JUAN (St. John’s Square)

PLAZA DE SAN JUAN

This is the Square where the St. John’s Church is placed.
Because of its withdrawn situation, surrounded by the Ecijan hamlet, it shapes a space of natural beauty.
The views of the Church and the entrance yard with its walls and columns constitute a very attractive frame.


CALLE MÁRMOLES (Marble Street)

CALLE MÁRMOLES

The name of this Street comes from the high amount of Roman building elements that appeared when some buildings were erected along the Modern age, being these interpreted as remains of the foundations of a pretended Temple for the Cult of Sun.
Today it is known that the Street is located at the end of the Roman town Forum. It is one of the most beautiful streets of the town because the view from the Miguel de Cervantes Street gives a special aesthetics due to its narrowness. The night view of the Almenara Alta Palace and the St. Giles (san Gil) tower at its other end moves us to other times.


TRASERA DE LAS MARROQUIES (Back of the Marroquies Convent)

It stands out because its narrow design and location between the traditional hamlet of Ecija and the Marroquies convent belfry, with a splendid work of tiles and bricks made by Ecijan master builders.


CALLE SOR ANGELA DE LA CRUZ (Street)

It is framed among palace houses of noblemen and lords.
Among them we highlight the Capuchin convent now occupied by the community of the Cross Sisters, the facades of the Counts del Aguila, the Bobadillas’ Palace and other signorial facades from the XVIIIth century.


CALLE ARCIPRESTE APARICIO (Archpriest Aparicio Street)  

DESCRIPTION AND INTERESTING INFORMATION
CALLE ARCIPRESTE APARICIO

This place has a unique monumentality because you can contemplate from it several Palaces and the towers of St. Anne, St. Giles and St. John from the corner of the Caballeros (Knights) Street.
The street narrowness, surrounded by the palaces facades with the St. John’s tower at the end gives an awesome vision because of its high artistic and monumental value.


CALLE GARCILASO (Street)

CALLE GARCILASO

This street has uncountable singular buildings with facades of great historic interest.
Among those, we highlight the Garcilaso de La Vega Palace with its interesting facade from 1.600, as well as another building of Plateresque elements from the XVIIth century.


CALLE BIZCO PARDAL (Street)

DESCRIPTION AND INTERESTING INFORMATION
CALLE BIZCO PARDAL

It is also known as  “Callejuela del Cojo” (The Lame Man’s Lane).
It is a narrow and winding lane belonging to the former Moorish quarters.
In this incomparable place we can enjoy the peace and serenity of the Ecijan evenings.
