JESUS’ ENTRANCE IN JERUSALEM

ENTRADA DE JESÚS EN JERUSALÉN

The sacred Image of Jesus coming triumphantly into Jerusalem is a work of Sevillian imaginero Alvarez Duarte (year 1974).

Translator’s Note: An “imaginero” is a craftsman who carves saints’ statues in wood.

“La Borriquita” (“Little Donkey”, popular name for the Palm Sunday main procession) is a work from Sevillian Francisco Fernandez Enriquez (year 2000).

NUESTRO PADRE JESUS CAUTIVO (OUR FATHER THE CAPTIVE JESUS)

NUESTRO PADRE JESÚS CAUTIVO

This Brotherhood Titular is a masterwork of Sevillian imaginero Cayetano Gonzalez, from the year 1947.
It has a peculiar Crown of Thorns, as it has been carved by the master on to the Sacred Image of Jesus, still Captive. 

NUESTRA SENORA DE LAS LÁGRIMAS (OUR LADY OF THE TEARS)

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LAS LÁGRIMAS

Our Lady of the Tears (Nuestra Senora de las Lagrimas) goes on procession on a paso with a canopy embroidered on burgundy velvet made by Jose Luis Asencio Munoz.

Translator’s Note: A paso is a float where an image depicting Christ or the Blessed Virgin is carried on procession along the Holy Week. It looks like a boat floating on a gentle swell. There are no cartwheels, no gun carriages, no lorries, but some 24 strong young men hidden underneath, bearing this great weight on their necks. These are the costaleros, and this is their great annual penance. 

On the canopy ceiling inside there is an oval painting from Rafael Amadeo Rojas.
The precious metals work has been made at the workshop of the Sons of Juan Fernandez, and the set of jugs is from Mr. Villareal.
The image was made by an anonymous author of the XVIIIth century.


SANTISIMO CRISTO DE LA YEDRA (VERY HOLY CHRIST OF THE IVY)

Cristo de la Yedra

This Image is the Titular of the Brotherhood of the Santísimo Cristo de la Yedra.
This anonymous work carved on wood dates back to 1630.
It dominates the Main Altarpiece at St. Anne’s church.
It goes on procession on Holy Monday.

NUESTRA SENORA DE LA CARIDAD (OUR LADY OF CHARITY)

Nuestra Señora de la Caridad

She is the Brotherhood of the Santísimo Cristo de la Yedra  Co-titular.
It is a “candelero” image made by imaginero Francisco Buiza Fernandez made in 1961.

Translation Note: A candelero image is an image carved from head to waist; it leans on a candelero, a conical support covered by the image’s clothing.

It goes on procession on Holy Monday.


 

NUESTRO PADRE JESUS DE LA MISERICORDIA
(OUR FATHER JESUS THE MERCIFUL)

Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Misericordia

This is an articulated sculptoric image. 
Its carving is related to Sevillian sculptor Montes de Oca’s production ca. 1728.
It is placed at the family Montero’s chapel.
Ecijan sculptor Rafael Amadeo Rojas Alvarez has restored it in 1995.

 

SANTISIMO CRISTO DE LA EXPIRACIÓN (VERY HOLY CHRIST OF EXPIRATION)

This Image is the Titular of the Brotherhood of the Santisimo Cristo de la Expiracion.
It is a work made by Sevillian sculptor Pedro Roldan carved in 1680.
Jose Rodriguez Rivero-Carrera has restored it in 1991.
It dominates the Chapel of the same name.
It goes on procession on Holy Tuesday.

 

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LOS DOLORES (OUR LADY OF THE SORROWS)

Nuestra Señora de los Dolores

She is the Brotherhood of the Santisimo Cristo de la Expiracion Co-titular.
It is a candelero image with carved head and hands only and dressed with clothes.
This anonymous work dates back from 1713.
It goes on procession on Holy Tuesday.

It is an anonymous work from the XIXth century.
The legs were carved by sculptor Antonio Alba and were reformed by Rafael Gomez Amador in 1993.

This is the Titular of the Brotherhood of the Santísimo Cristo del Confalón.
It is venerated at the main Altarpiece of the Victoria Church.
It is a remarkable sculpture of unknown author made ca. the second quarter of the XVIIIth century.
Sevillian sculptor Francisco Buiza Fernandez has restored it in 1970.
It goes on procession on Maundy Thursday.

It dates back to early XVIIIth century, although the bust and limbs remind us the sculptoric style of the XVIth century; it is venerated at an XVIIIth century altarpiece.

It is a candelero image dressed with superimposed clothing.
The original woodcarving can be dated back by the end of the XVIIIth century.
Francisco Buiza Fernandez has restored its hands in 1970 and by Juan Manuel Abad Gutierrez and Silvia Martinez Garcia Otero in 1996.
It goes on procession on Maundy Thursday.

He is the Titular of the Brotherhood of the Santisimo Cristo de la Sangre.
It is a masterpiece from Sevillian sculptor Gaspar de Aguilar carved in 1567.
The image has undergone several restorations, outstanding the one performed by Rosa Maria Rodriguez Azogue in 1996.
It goes on procession on Maundy Thursday.

NUESTRO PADRE JESUS NAZARENO ABRAZADO A LA CRUZ

NUESTRO PADRE JESÚS NAZARENO ABRAZADO A LA CRUZ

This miraculous image is granted to Pedro Roldan.
Its Baroque Cross is made of sterling silver (XVIIIth century) and has been enlarged by Villareal imitating its original design.
The beams are also made of sterling silver (XVIIIth century) in Rococo style by Damian de Castro probably.
The image is dressed with a richly embroidered tunic of purple velvet, with a style similar to the Cross’ (XVIIIth century).

MARIA SANTISIMA DE LA AMARGURA (VERY HOLY MARY OF BITERNESS)

MARÍA SANTÍSIMA DE LA AMARGURA

The very Holy Virgin of Bitterness image was made by Antonio Castillo Lastruccí in 1965.
The Canopied paso of Sevillian style, embroidered with gold and silver, is a work from Ecijan artist Joaquin Ojeda.
The shafts have been made by Angula and the tail candelabra by Villareal.

OUR FATHER JESUS THE NAZARENE (NUESTRO PADRE JESUS NAZARENO)

NUESTRO PADRE JESÚS NAZARENO

The sacred image of Jesus the Nazarene in His way to the Calvary is from Sevillian XVIIth century School and its author is unknown; it was restored during last century 60s decade by Francisco Buiza and Joaquin Ojeda.
It goes on procession with a Baroque layette reformed by Antonio Martin.
The lamps were made in gilded metal by Villareal.
The four evangelists were carved by Ricardo Comas and the purple damask tails were designed and embroidered by Joaquin Ojeda.

NUESTRA SENORA DE LAS MISERICORDIAS (OUR LADY OF MERCY)

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LAS MISERICORDIAS

Ricardo Comas, following Sevillian style, carved the very Holy Virgin of Mercy accompanied by St. John.
All the precious metals work of the splendid paso has been made by Villareal.
The blue velvet mantle with golden embroidering has been made by Sevillian Juan Manuel Rodriguez Ojeda.
The wings are made of golden embroidered maroon velvet designed by Joaquin Ojeda and the canopy’s ceiling shows embroiderings from the XVIIIth century on maroon velvet, with a silver medallion of the Holy Virgin’s Crowning embroidered in gold and silk.

NUESTRO PADRE JESUS SIN SOGA (OUR FATHER JESUS WITHOUT CORD)

NUESTRO PADRE JESÚS SIN SOGA

The name comes from a legendary tradition of St. Barbara Church’s outside chapel where it is venerated a painted image of Jesus giving his waist cord to a needy man; the esparto cord changed into gold, so the man could help his sick wife’s healing with the money.
Jesus Image (wood carving) was made by Jose Montes de Oca in 1733 and comes from the old Convent of San Gregorio (St. Gregory).

NUESTRA SENORA DE LA FE (OUR LADY OF FAITH)

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA FE

The Virgen of Faith is an anonymous work from the XVIIIth century and comes from the Convent of St. Paul and St. Dominic and it went on procession until the XIXth as the Titular of the now disappeared Brotherhood of Cristo Yacente (lying Christ) from the mentioned Convent.
Nowadays it goes on procession on a paso carved by Francisco Palos in the 1980s, gilded by José Luis Asencio Muñoz.

MISTERIO DE LA SAGRADA MORTAJA (MISTERY OF THE SACRED SHROUD)

MISTERIO DE LA SAGRADA MORTAJA

The Mystery depicts Jesus handed over His Mother’s arms, and was carved by Sevillian Manuel Ramos Corona in 1991; it is a strongly foreshortened figure made of polychromed red cedar wood. 
The Sacred Image of the Holy Virgin of Piety is a Neapolitan wood carving from the XVIIIth century of anonymous author (1763-1766) and comes from the Carmelitas Descalzos (Barefoot Carmelites) Convent; it has been restored in 1991 by Mr. Manuel Ramos Corona and their original interlaced hands were changed by open hands, more fit to their new supporting function.

SANTISIMO CRISTO DE LA EXALTACIÓN
(VERY HOLY CHRIST OF EXALTATION ON THE CROSS)

It is a polychromed wood carving made by Miguel de Vilches in 1597.

NUESTRA SENORA DE LA PIEDAD  (OUR LADY OF PIETY)

She is the Brotherhood of the Santisimo Cristo de la Exaltación de la Cruz co-titular. 
This is a candelero image from mid-XVIIIth century restored by Ricardo Comas in 1992.
It goes on procession on Good Friday.
Since 1997 Nuestra Senora de la Piedad carries out Her Penance Stations accompanied by St. John Evangelist, another anonymous image from early XIXth century.
It has been restored by Rafael Amadeo Rojas in 1997.


QUINTA ANGUSTIA (THE FIFTH ANGUISH)

DESCRIPTION AND INTERESTING INFORMATION
QUINTA ANGUSTIA

The iconographic group made of carved and polychromed wood is formed by the Virgin Mary holding Jesus Christ on Her arms helped by St. John; this work is granted to Jorge Fernandez Aleman, dated in 1500, and was restored by the High School of Cultural Goods of Madrid in 1993.
In front of the Group, Mary Magdalene goes on procession, being made also of carved and polychromed wood in the XVIIIth century. At the edge of the layette there are two Passion (of Christ) Angels wearing mourning ribbons, they are both equally made of carved and polychromed wood in the XVIIIth. The silver and tortoiseshell Cross that closes the Mystery is also from this century.


SANTO ENTIERRO DE NUESTRO SENOR JESUCRISTO
(HOLY BURIAL OF OUR LORD)

SANTO ENTIERRO DE NUESTRO SEÑOR JESUCRISTO

The venerated image of Jesus in His Holy Sepulchre belongs to Late Gothic style and dates back to the XIV-XVth centuries, its author is unknown. 
With this life-size image of great hieratic attitude the sculptor means the lack of movement typical of corpses, although a certain stress is transmitted.
His Hands are resting on His Lap, His Legs are flexed, and only leaning on the Heels; the Lord’s Face looks placidly asleep.
This lying Christ goes on procession inside a neoclassic urn made of silver and tortoiseshell from 1725.


NUESTRA SENORA DE LA SOLEDAD (OUR LADY OF LONELINESS)

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA SOLEDAD

The Virgen de la Soledad, beautiful Ecijan Dolorosa (Pitiful) from the XVIIIth century, is a candelero image to be dressed and wearing natural hair.
Our Lady goes on procession on a Baroque float or paso made in carved and gilded wood by Manuel Guzman Bejarano; on a considerable high polychromed platform, surrounded by tall shaded candelabra and Passion angels alternating with silver lamps, all the scene is displayed following the purest Ecijan style. 
The Virgin image is surrounded by a splendid sterling silver cloud, half-moon and crown all chiselled by the silversmith Damian de Castro, from ca.1770.
The paso has four Archangels, one in each corner, all of them made of carved, polychromed and decorated wood and granted to the sculptress Luisa Roldan, better known by her nickname, “la Roldana”.
The four Evangelists accompanying the paso are from the XVIIIth century.


CRISTO RESUCITADO (RESUSCITATED CHRIST)

CRISTO RESUCITADO

The Sacred Image of Resuscitated Christ Triumph is a work of anonymous author from the XVIIIth century and was restored by Ricardo Comas.
The first Rules of this Brotherhood date back to 1601, approved by Diocese Judge or Provisor Pedro de Santander Manrique, being constituted as Penance Brotherhood under the Title of  “Stmo. Descendimiento de la Cruz, Benditísimo Entierro y Resurrección de Ntro. Sr. Jesucristo” (Very Holy Descending from the Cross, Very Blessed Burial and Resuscitation of Our Lord Jesus Christ); this Brotherhood is linked to the celebration of the day of the Holy Cross since that year.
Several papal bulls were given to the Brotherhood by Their Holinesses Gregory XIII (1580), Gregory XIV (1591), Clement VIII (1604) and Paul V (1610).
This first phase lasts until 1841.
It was founded again in 1979 keeping the Sacramental and of Resuscitation Title.
The present Rules are from February 12, 1990.


VIRGEN DE LA ALEGRÍA (VIRGIN OF THE JOY)

VIRGEN DE LA ALEGRÍA

The Very Holy Virgin of the Joy is carried on procession by costaleras (female) Sisters; this image was made by Sevillian imaginero Antonio Dube de Luque in 1988.
The layette comes from the workshop of Andalusian gold- and silverwork of Manuel de los Rios in Seville.
The beautiful gold on white velvet mantle is a piece of art from the hands of Ecijan Jose Luis Asencio Munoz.
